Woodbridge Youth Soccer – Travel Team FAQ

Q: Why is it called “travel” soccer?
A: Great question! Our “travel” soccer teams are made up of competitively selected players who represent Woodbridge Youth Soccer in games across the Mid-New Jersey region. Since these teams play both home and away games at different towns and clubs, the name “travel soccer” simply reflects that commitment to regional competition and development.

Q: Who can try out for a Woodbridge Youth Soccer travel team?
A: Tryouts are open to all eligible players in the area—regardless of whether they’ve previously played in our recreational league. If your child is passionate about soccer and ready for a greater challenge, they’re welcome to try out!

Q: Who do the travel teams compete against?
A: Our teams compete with others in established leagues like EDP and MNJYSA. These opponents are fellow travel-level teams from nearby towns and soccer clubs, providing competitive and well-matched games.

Q: What kind of commitment is expected from travel players and their families?
A: Travel soccer is a rewarding experience—but it does come with a greater commitment. Players and parents should be prepared to prioritize travel soccer activities, with the understanding that team and personal development depend on consistency and effort.

We know life is full—so exceptions like school, school athletics, and religious obligations are always understood. That said, when there's a conflict between recreational and travel soccer, we kindly ask families to give priority to the travel team’s games and practices.

Q: How much soccer are we talking about?
A: Here’s a rough breakdown:

  • Fall & Spring Seasons: Around 10 games each season (mostly Sundays), plus two practices per week.

  • Summer: Optional training sessions and potential team practices.

  • Winter: Varies per team.

  • Tournaments: Optional, but many teams join at least one per season.

  • Year-Round Development: Many teams practice or train outside of the regular season to keep skills sharp and build team chemistry.

Q: Is travel soccer right for my child?
A: Travel soccer isn’t for everyone—and that’s okay! But for the kids (and families) who commit, the experience is incredibly rewarding. Players often see major growth in skills, confidence, and teamwork. They form lasting friendships, build resilience, and learn valuable life lessons about dedication and effort. Winning is great, but development and character come first.

Q: How far do we have to travel?
A: While teams do travel throughout the region, about half of the games are home games right here in Woodbridge. We also do our best to keep away games as local as possible, balancing competition with convenience.

Q: Who runs the travel teams?
A: Woodbridge Youth Soccer handles the formation and administration of each travel team. Every team is led by a qualified coach selected by our club—someone focused on developing player skills, managing practices, and coaching games.

Q: How are players selected for travel teams?
A: Tryouts are usually held in April or May, and they’re open to all age-eligible players. We encourage everyone interested—regardless of prior club or league experience—to give it a shot!

Q: What does it cost to play travel soccer?
A: Travel soccer does involve more expenses than recreational league play. Costs cover uniforms, league fees, insurance, tournament entry, training, and indoor facility rentals for the off-season.

However, we also offer fundraising opportunities to help families offset these costs. We're committed to making this enriching experience as accessible as possible.
